New downtown Norfolk gym hopes to carve a niche in crowded market

In what is already a crowded marketplace for fitness clubs, a Suffolk-based gym is trying to enter the fray by expanding its high-end brand with a facility in the competitive downtown Norfolk gym scene. Having spent around $1 million in capital investment, Premier Fitness plans to open its second location, in a renovated historic building downtown on Tazewell Street between Granby and Boush streets, this month or next. The 13,000-square-foot, 3½-story facility will try to attract both downtown employees and residents with an upscale, adult-oriented fitness experience, founder Brian Cavanaugh said. There are no basketball courts or pools, Cavanaugh said, adding, “We don’t sell family memberships.” Premier Fitness was founded in Suffolk after Cavanaugh, a longtime local who previously worked at Virginia Beach fitness staple Wareing’s Gym, decided to strike out on his own. I find it funny that Brian claims to be the owner of Premier fitness and now I have read in insidebiz that he blew thru someone elses money and doesn't have a dime invested in the business. I guess you eventually get what is coming to ya. good luck on the gym floor brian
