Dressed to Move

Fashion can be a frivolous business. But it can also be a deeply personal statement about who we are and how we view the world.

We recently went on a style hunt at some of our favorite locally owned boutiques—OK, we also went to Target, but hey, what’s not to love?—and we turned up some fall fashions that are fierce, fun and full of unexpected details.

What’s hot this season? Rock-n-roll style is putting an edge on things. But put-together polish is hanging in there, even in a tough economy. As one shop owner told us, when the ship is sinking, people like to dress up.

Black is back. Bling is in. Ruffles and lace abound, especially in understated tones. Purples, greens, pinks and oranges dominate the color palette. Fun retro florals—think ’50s cocktail dresses—are popping up. Mix-and-match patterns are all good. And the ’80s revival is still in full swing (even stirrup pants are back, but dear God, we just couldn’t go there).
