Richmond's Riches

hannah.serrano@portfolioweekly.com

With First Friday coming up and warm weather liberating art lovers to travel beyond their own communities, a trip to RVA would be well worth it this weekend. At the Page Bond Gallery, 1625 W. Main St., is an exhibition of new paintings by Louis Poole and Curtis Ripley. Poole, a long-time Richmond artist, is known for his abstracted cottages and vernacular houses taken from his travels around Virginia and the Outer Banks. Ripley, a resident of Los Angeles, paints colorful, dreamlike abstractions that he has exhibited in Richmond since the 1970s. The show’s opening reception is this Friday, from 7 to 9 p.m. It will remain on view through May 31. www.pagebondgallery.com

ALSO The VCU Photo and Film dept. is exhibiting first-year MFA students’ Candidacy Show through May 2. The show, on view at Plant Zero (0 East 4th St), will highlight the talents of the MFA candidates Hassan Pitts, Nia Burks, Jennida Chase and John Hendershot, spanning photography, video, and sound installation. Chase, who in her work deals with relational interaction played out in society; and Burks, who deals with gender roles, personal identity, sexuality, ownership and access to the body, both hail from the Seven Cities.

OPPORTUNITIES ABOUND: For the second year, Blue Skies Gallery (26 S. King St., Hampton) is offering their Artistic Horizons Summer Internship to artists who are high school juniors or seniors. The internship, which runs through July and Aug., exchanges four weeks of gallery work with the concurrent display of the student’s art. The deadline for application (found at www.blueskiesart.com) is June 1.

ALSO A call to artists has been made for the 17th Street Art Festival. The one-day outdoor tent event, which takes place at the 17th Street Park at the Oceanfront on July 26, showcases regional artists. The prospectus deadline is this Wed., April 30. Email SuzCowan1@juno.com  or call 499-6053 for info.

SUMMER SERIES: From May 2 to Sept. 5, Towne Place at Greenbrier (Eden Way North, Chesapeake) will host a series of free summer music and art shows. The Towne Place at Greenbrier Summer Concert Series, which is co-sponsored by Max Media and 92.9 The Wave, will take place every Fri. from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. On the fourth Sat. of each month from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., local artists will exhibit and sell artwork, jewelry and craft from open tents.
